A brief history of drawer construction - the good, the bad and the ugly!

There are many ways to make a drawer, but not all drawers are equal. If you were to buy furniture or Cabinet you read this before you your hard earned money.

Drawer joints in order of strength

Dovetails

The very best drawers are with English front and back deals made. There are two kinds of dovetail joints. First, classic English, visible side drawer same ("slide".) is second, hidden aka the blind French up from below What is different is this joint considering pressure it tends, tighter because the male part fitted in drawer front not parallel the joint remains and will close with the pressure is applied to drawer front.

Box joints

Can a common very effectively if done with care, using narrow tolerances. Similar in appearance to the dovetail, excluding the pages of the joint is parallel.

Tongue and Groove

Much like a blind French swallowtail but to open on one side. This joint is easier to make, but not as much as the above type of joints.

Butt joint

The joint is lined up just the page tray with drawer front and back sides and attached in any way from glue, nails, Staples, screws or cam fasteners (IKEA type self assembly). Generally considered a good common where safely mounted with adhesive and pressure applied while glue. Zusammengestückelt folk art or primitive pieces of this simple method of drawer construction use many.

Glue makes the difference

Proper use of the right kind and effective application of glue can alleviate many common shortcomings. Today's adhesives are much stronger and longer lasting than old-fashioned adhesives. The most glue needs consistent pressure of clamping force to maximum strength method for glued joints. Without that pressure 90% strength may be lost. Pressure to achieve either clamps or stables, to hold joint company, until the glue has set. Staples alone are essentially no joints at all.

Drawer systems

Oh my God, thousands of different systems to open and close the tray!

Before the 1940s almost all drawers were pushed no matter what quality simply in an opening in a supporting structure. The supporting structure or case had sometimes a panel between the drawers to prevent that dust created by opening the drawer or dust through the effect of wood rubs wood created is drawn into the case from the suction. This is a very difficult way to a drawer require hand fits the drawer box into the case and what often to stick to fit in wet weather.

Time savings in production a wood center guide system was invented. Better quality production below would degree "top" in use to keep the disc tray by dropping and some hand fitting was a smooth opening of required get drawer. The center guide system allows a gap between the drawer box and case page and centering of the gap. This reduces the work by a large factor.

A new system invented in the 1960's, that to keep a plastic clip on the back of the tray set of fall off. That would smoothly push plastic, but it had a big problem. The problem was that time, any downward pressure would snap sliding and plastic would deteriorate.

The next innovation was the European style site, capturing the roller systems. These systems have a lot of benefits. When installed correctly is to give you years of trouble-free operation. You work with a double nylon wheel system, locks, and roles in a track. The wheel in the track on one side a margin of about 1/8 "on the other hand is recognized." type innovation that is installing production speeds

At the same time came the "ball bearing system" line. These are the best kind of slide with a weight capacity of up to 100 pounds. Upgrades include earthquake stops on these types of films, full pull out up to 110%, page or mount hidden and soft or self-closing drawers.
